Vanja Mrgan is a self-proclaimed Croatian illustrator, geek and an all around alright kinda guy who takes it upon himself to answer burning questions like: What would Wario look like with a beard? What would the Black Mage from Final fantasy look like with a beard? What would Mr. Game and Watch look like with a beard? What would RoboCop look like with a beard.

I think you get the idea.

Enjoy some of Vanja Mrgan’s bearded renditions of iconic pop culture icons below.

The Hundreds x Stan Sakai – Limited Edition Usagi Yojimbo 25th Anniversary Tees

November 18th, 2009 by brownkidd

ARMOR_4_BLACK

This week The Hundreds will be releasing two fresh new limited edition T-shirts at their flagship stores in SF and LA. They’ve joined forces with the iconic comic book master Stan Sakai, best known for his comic book series Usagi Yojimbo, which is currently published by Dark Horse Comics.

Each tee features none other than the one and only Miyamoto Usagi, a ronin samurai rabbit loosely based on Miyamoto Musashi – the famous Japanese swordsman. You may also remember Usagi from a little cartoon back in the day called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Stan Sakai himself will be making an appearance at The Hundreds store in LA on Saturday, November 21st from 11 am to 12pm to sign the latest issue of his monthly series. And to top it all off, the first 25 people to show will also score a signed copy of Yokai, the first full-color Usagi Yojimbo comic.

“I am always excited to hear stories of the impact of Usagi on other creative individuals, especially those working outside of comics” said Usagi Yojimbo creator, Stan Sakai. “I hope that this collaboration exposes a whole new group of people to Usagi, and comics in general. I’m grateful to have had the chance to work on this project with Bobby and everyone at The Hundreds.”

“Much of what I do today, as creative director for the Hundreds, stems from poring over Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo art as a youth,” said The Hundreds co-founder Bobby Kim. “To this day, it was one of the most influential comic books in my life, and so it was an honor to work with Stan on two exclusive pieces of art for The Hundreds. To any fan of The Hundreds, it is important to acknowledge and appreciate Usagi Yojimbo’s inspiration to the brand.”

Daily Graffiti: Animal Crossing Mural of Randomness

November 2nd, 2009 by brownkidd

(click on the picture for a bigger view)

This awesomely random mural featuring Animal Crossing, Yoda, and Batman among other things was sent in by loyal Albotian, Don Schwabs aka the dude who did the Scribblenauts Munny.

While looking for a toy store in a part of town I rarely visit, I got lost and turned down a back lane to double back the way I came. I got an awesome surprise when I spotted this mural on the back of a bicycle shop of all places. I love Animal Crossing, so I ended up coming back with my camera to take a couple of pics and merge into the one mural.

Thanks a bunch, dude! You should get lost more often so you can find more awesome stuff!

Halftone Comic Halloween Costume

October 28th, 2009 by brownkidd

comic-re-1

When it comes to dressing up like comic book characters for Halloween, this chick doesn’t mess around. She easily could’ve been Wonder Woman or Bat Girl, but she went oldschool and got made up into a halftone dot-printed comic character.

Was anyone else captivated by how huge that earring is?

Check some costume-in-progress pics after the break. More »

A reader by the name of Andrés sent me pictures of this badass Batman stencil graffiti spotted on a bridge in Mexico, but that’s not even the coolest part.

Okay, now here’s a zoomed-out pic. Notice that the arch on the bridge is starting to take shape?

batman bridge

Can you see it yet?

ZOMG! It’s Batman!!!

Andrés also says, “the bridge is in front of the justice department in my city, and HE is keeping an eye on them…”

Thanks for sending this in, Andrés!

My hair is Batman.

What. An. Ass. Seriously, I’m not sure what’s more idiotic: the kid for thinking his hair is awesome, or the parents who paid for the kid to look like an asstard.

Twitter Takes Over Comics

October 7th, 2009 by brownkidd

forgetless1_001

Really?

The above image is the first page of Forgetless, the new series from Image Comics which drops December 9th. The story has something to do with a wannabe-model in New York who turns into an assassin, but she’s also a hipster on the side. Or something.

Here’s another page showing off a bunch of fashionable hipster kids in a dumpy apartment, sans-tweets:
forgetless1_017

And here’s the cover which appeals to the graphic design nerd in me:
forgetless1_cov
$3.50!? I remember back when comix where $1.50 – $2.00!!!

I like the art (moreso the coloring), but the only reason I’m really posting about it is because it looks like Tweetdeck barfed and/or ejaculated all over the first page.

Is this gonna’ be a new “thing” in comics? Are Facebook wall comments next?

‘What A Wonderful World’ – ‘Catcher in the Rye’ Meets ‘Reality Bites’ in Manga Form

October 6th, 2009 by brownkidd

Basic CMYK

I’m currently catching up on a good deal of ongoing manga, but every now and then it’s nice to read a short series that you don’t have invest too much time (and money) in.

On October 20th, Viz Media will release What a Wonderful World, a 2-volume collection of intersecting vignettes depicting twenty-something angst. It sounds a little too depressing for my taste, but the cover art by Inio Asano (who also wrote the story) has me completely sold.

“Inio Asano masterfully captures the essence of youth, and WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD! depicts both the exhilaration and frustration felt by a diverse group of twenty-somethings trying to find their place amidst the impersonal urban sprawl of Tokyo,” says Candice Uyloan, Director, Brand Management for VIZ Media. “Fans of everything from Catcher in the Rye to Reality Bites will find this series an impressive and heartfelt read. Asano’s realistic story is ultimately a commentary on how modern life and the choices one makes impact the struggle to grow up and fit in and we look forward to readers discovering this thought-provoking new title.”

I just might have to pick this one up.

Found on Twitter: Capcom-inspired Scott Pilgrim Pinup

August 25th, 2009 by brownkidd

Scott Pilgrim artist Bryan Lee O’Malley drew up this amazing pinup in homage to the Capcom piece below for Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix. This picture single-handedly karate chopped my brain into a state of glitter, chocolate donuts with sprinkles, and ecstasy and I might have to get it tattooed on my entire back. Or face.

Wonder Woman Reeboks Will Get You Laid

August 24th, 2009 by brownkidd

reebokwonderwoman

I’d fuck a girl wearing these no matter how fat she was. I’d just have to ask my girlfriend if it was okay first, but I’m sure she’d understand. I mean, they are some pretty fresh kicks, so I think that counts for a free pass.

As a public service to all fat, ugly chicks who have trouble getting dudes to go near their grody-ass crotches, pick up a pair of these limited edition Reeboks from Schuh and thank me later. You can also feel free to send me any n00dz of you wearing nothing but the kicks.

D00dz, would you ram a chick if she had these shoes on? What if she kinda’ looked not-so-good? Ladies, would you let your dude bang another ho if she had these shoes on? What if you could get a pair for yourself afterward? I know how bitches be lovin’ shoes. Any fugly chicks out there use these kicks to get laid? Leave a detailed account of your success in the comments.

If Photoshop Filters Were Super Heroes

August 24th, 2009 by brownkidd

squirt

If PhotoShop filters were super heroes, who do you think would win in a battle royal cage match? I personally think Clouds dresses too provocatively and it it would just turn into a giant super-powered PhotoShop orgy. I could only imagine what Motion Blur’s flapping ballsack looks like in action. If only there was a filter called Money Shot.

This sexy design is actually a T-Shirt that you can purchase from Chop Shop. Aside from making you look a gazillion times more awesome, this shirt can be used to repel those pesky unwanted attractive females, and it may also cause your parents to question your sexuality from time to time. But when combined with a mask, some gloves, and a sweet belt, this shirt can turn you into a hero…

filterheroesman

… a hero with the ability to repel attractive females and constantly have his sexuality questioned by his peers.

Does your cunning 5th grade sense of humor give you the ability to turn PhotoShop filters into sexual innuendos? What happened to Crystallize’s right pant leg? Where did Chrome’s penis go? Ladies, would you have sex with the super hero guy? Would you make him keep the mask on while he chewed your muffin? Where can I get one of those sweet belts? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Live-Action ‘Walking Dead’ Series to Air on AMC

August 13th, 2009 by brownkidd

walking_dead

I was lucky enough to pick up the 1st issue of The Walking Dead on a total fluke when it first came out. I’d been out of the comic scene for about three or four years, but I’d just graduated high school and didn’t really have a whole lot to do for the summer, so I decided to hit up the local comic shop one day. There it was: Walking Dead #1. My mind was blown and I was addicted to comics again. I made it up to about issue #32 before my comic addiction became way too expensive (I was seriously spending $100 – $300 on comics a week) and I had to give it a rest for a while.

I may have fallen out of the series, but I can recall reading the editor’s notes and letters in the back of early issues and, even then, a few years ago, they were mentioning a TV series. Although, I was thinking more along the lines of something like Showtime or HBO, not AMC.

Although the development deal isn’t officially set in stone yet, Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) is set to write and direct.

Variety reports:

Cabler is close to finalizing one of the richest development deals ever with Darabont to write and direct a series adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel series “The Walking Dead,” penned by Robert Kirkman. Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion are also on board to exec produce.

Project is set among a group of zombie survivors of an apocalypse who are led by a police officer, Rick Grimes, in search of a safe place to live. Numerous editions of the “Walking Dead” graphic novels have been published since 2003.

Joel Stillerman, AMC’s senior veep of programming, production and original content, said the project appealed to the cabler because of “the quality of the storytelling” in Kirkman’s work. The series will stay faithful to the tone of the original novels, he said.

“This is not about zombies popping out of closets,” Stillerman said. “This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in ‘Walking Dead’) is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way.”

Cable 20″ Mega Munny by Josh Pearce

August 11th, 2009 by brownkidd

Josh Pearce was commissioned to customize a blank 20″ Mega Munny figure into the likeness of everyone’s favorite time-traveling mutant, Cable. The detail on this thing is amazing. I’m loving the subtle details on the arm, hair, and the scar on his face. Even the belt and pockets are off the hook!
